Evidence-based therapy tailored to you
What is Emotion Focused Therapy?
Welcome to my practice, where I offer Emotion Focused Therapy to transform your painful feelings and facilitate emotional healing. Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based treatment approach for clients struggling with a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, complex trauma, and relationship difficulties.
EFT works by helping clients improve their emotional processing. This means that clients learn to develop greater awareness of their feelings, to understand and make sense of their feelings, and cope with their feelings in a more productive way. One of the ultimate goals within EFT is the transformation of unhelpful emotions such as fear or shame into more helpful emotions such as self-compassion or empowered self-assertion.
In EFT, clients work with an empathic, attuned therapist who acts as a sturdy guide in the exploration and transformation of emotion. Over time, clients may also come to new understandings of themselves, their difficulties, and move forward from old ways of seeing and feeling about themselves that have kept them stuck.
What does an EFT session look like?
EFT is a highly experiential therapy, which means that actually feeling your emotions (safely, with my support) will be an integral part of treatment.
In session, I will support you in directly exploring difficult emotions and the situations that give rise to them. We might uncover and discuss the historical origins of your painful feelings, or we might engage in specific interventions to explore how exactly you end up feeling so bad, and identify what you might need in order to feel better.
Although experiencing painful emotions in session might sound uncomfortable, I always do my best to keep your experience within an optimal level of arousal, so that it does not become too overwhelming. Additionally, most clients I work with also feel relief from working directly with what pains them and report finding this therapy highly effective.
